I am starting to go through my 60 4x4 short fleet it is all original except the engine and bell housing. About 10 years ago I pulled out the 327 my uncle put in it in 1972,I replaced it with a sb400 that I had built and waiting to go in something. Now I am going to put her back to some what original. I have enough 235 and 261 parts to build either motor. Which would be the best, coolest? The truck came with a 235 if that makes any difference.

"Best" or "Coolest" is a personal matter.

The 261 is a stronger engine.

If the year of either engine matches the year of your truck, you might want to use that engine.

Maybe someone knows if the 261 was standard in 1961 on 4X4 engines?

Around here the 261 upgrade is envied for the ad trucks. Not heard of the engine in many Apache era trucks. Either way seems fair to me.

It looks like the 261 was the standard engine on 1960 2WD C60 trucks (CLST60 or C60 LST)?
What is the model number (if any) for a 1960 C60 4 wheel drive truck?
And, what drive-train components were standard on a 1960 CLST60?

In 1960, the K10 and K20 (4WD) trucks were 4-wheel drive
(4-speed manual transmission, and standard Thriftmaster 235, or RPO V8 327)

The 261 is 10.8% larger than the 235, far greater increase than the Cadillac stroker.

As of today, not yet leaning to either motor. .I am pulling parts, twisting micrometers and over thinking my belly button right now. The 261 is a complete and running motor ,oil pump, oil bath, oil filter, and all the goodies. Maybe tomorow
