I have my chrome pieces back from the chrome shop and wanted to ask opinions on installation of the hood pieces. Should a gasket be placed underneath the model (9430- 1 ton) and GMC hood side call out? Any side piece I've removed didn't seem to have a gasket.

Also, I haven't seen a reproduction gasket for the GMC front chrome piece that attaches to the grill surround. Should I make one or install without a gasket?

Thanks for the input.

I rarely see gaskets on side pieces of older original classic cars, but on restored cars I see them often. How good is your paint, and how worried are you about the badges wearing on it?

What LeeP said.

Gaskets would tend to trap debris and moisture too.

Hi Fox
I do not have gaskets on my trucks or the parts fenders. On yours or anyone with many hours in the paint
one does not want the pot metal to chip the paint and ultimately cause rust.

Just to be fussy gently dress the underside contact area with a fine file to remove any possible casting slag that could cause a high point.
And then snug down the speed nuts just enough. Put some dum dum under the nuts it will seal the holes for moisture and stop
the nuts from vibrating loose.

When your son is forty he will thank you.

Keep up the good work.
Howie

Howie,
What exactly is dum dum? I feel dum dum here! Haha! Is it a sealant?

My Toyota's rear bearings have piled up and the 1 ton is on the back burner now. 😁

Plumbers putty. It was used by GM between the hood hinges and the cab to keep rain out of the cab.
Personally, I would worry about filing on a chromed piece of pot metal. I am concerned about opening up pot metal to the atmosphere, leading to corrosion as pot metal is prone to do.
