Are you going to be able to keep dust and stuff out of your paint job on your carport? Do you care? When do you plan to paint. Paint likes warmer weather than we are having around here so inside just might be a good idea. But then, do you have a way to exhaust the bad vapors and such from your garage? Is your house going to smell like a spray booth? I did that once. Are you painting a complete vehicle at once or have you exploded your ride? That would help you decide how much room you need. Good luck.

Pick a day when the wind is light and that will cut down on the little floaters that tend to end up in the paint job. Not much you can do about the bugs except hope they will stay away. If one does get in the paint don't try to pick it out, that usually only makes it worse. Wait until the paint dries and then remove it carefully. If you are using a base coat/ clear coat system, get them out after the base coat has dried and then spray the clear. Since you will be under a carport that will help a lot. If you want to close the sides you could use plastic sheeting or tarps but you will need a fan to help exhaust the fumes. Painting outdoors can be done, just realize that you will not have a show truck finish. If you do all the prep work and take as many precautions as possible, a quality job is obtainable. Check out the link to my "70 C10, it was painted outdoors under a tarp I had suspended from poles at each corner. Hope this helps a little. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 284 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2005 Posts: 284 | I painted the cab of my truck in my portable garage and there was very little dust. Just wait till it warms up and it's not windy. Any dust can be wet sanded and buffed out. The key is in the prep of the truck. I washed mine the night before and spent considerable time blowing it off. It's been my experience that most of the dirt and dust comes from the vehicle itself Good luck | | | | | Joined: Jun 2006 Posts: 80 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jun 2006 Posts: 80 | A few months ago someone posted a article on this forum about building your own spraybooth inside of your garage or carport. It was a really interesting article and I printed it off and have it somewhere. It talked about the size and fan size and using filters from a home furnace to filter the air. It seemed very doable and not to expensive.
I don't remember where I put it but whoever posted it could maybe post it again? Maybe it could be found through the search on this site. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 172 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Jan 2007 Posts: 172 | Originally posted by bigbassmann: Not much you can do about the bugs except hope they will stay away. Right...my last paint job...a scooter...has quite a few kamikazi gnats painted into it. Just smoosh them and paint on next layer... 1965 Chevy C-30 1-Ton "Work like you don't need the money. It looks like Robin58 was the one who had the article in the first place. | | |
