There are 2 bulbs (lt gray wires) to illuminate the temp/fuel/oil /amp gauge cluster and there are 2 bulbs(lt gray wire) to illuminate the speedo cluster. The speedo also has what I believe is the high beam indicator light hole (lt green wire). This hole is in the center on the bottom of the speedo cluster. I have a illustration of the gauges and harness and it looks like the high beam hole should be on the top of the speedo cluster. May some one had it apart before and put it together upside down with the hole on the bottom? Also is the high beam lbulb a different color? There is no colored lens in the high beam hole to differentiate the high beam light from the other illumination bulbs. Thanks Don | | | | Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 436 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2010 Posts: 436 | Don, You might get a more intelligent reply if you told us what year truck you are working on. That would help tremendously. On both my '62 and '63 C10s, the high beam indicator was a standard clear bulb, but had a red lense on the cardboard tube that was between the front and rear of the speedometer and housed the bulb when it was installed. The wiring consists of a single light green wire and ground is provided by the speedometer housing. The high beam indicator is in the center of the speedometer, above the needle. Speedo_HighBeamI hope this helps you.

If you use the wrong bulb you will melt the plastic which gives you the red color. 90 MPH and 80 MPH speedometers have different high beam indicator bulb locations.

I took the speedo apart and flipped the cluster around so the high beam indicator is at the top of the gauge. When I looked into the tube the bulb snaps into I see a little hole in the gauge face that lines up with the lite. I figure I'm set. I go to see how it will look in the dash and find the mounting tabs are not symmetrical. The cluster will only mount up with the high beam lite to the bottom. I will flip the cluster again so the indicator is on the bottom. I guess I will have to drill a littl hole in the bottom of the gauge face for the lite to shine through. | | | | Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 2,554 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 2,554 | 52carl is correct about the high beam bulb being smaller. Both my 1951 guages have the high beam indicator at the bottom of the cluster . Sounds like your speedometer cluster was take apart and put back together wrong.

I found a Folgers coffee "can", which are now made of plastic, and cut a little circle out of it. Because the plastic is thicker than the stock lens, I used a bulb that is similar to the regular gauge lighting. | | | | Joined: Jan 2015 Posts: 51 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2015 Posts: 51 | Here is what I think I have. It looks like 47-49 had the high beam lite at the top of the speedo. 50-53 had them at the bottom. I probably have a 50 speedo housing with a 47-49 cluster. Some one probably used a 47-49 cluster as a donor into the 1950 housing. They put a 0-90 sticker on the old 0-80 face plate. I can drill a hole to line up with the bottom lite tub but I wonder if the speedo will register the right speed if it is a 80 mph cluster with a 90mph stiker? | | | | Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,059 Renaissance Man | Renaissance Man Joined: Mar 2010 Posts: 10,059 | Here is what I think I have. It will register no worse than the correct setup. These old speedometers are not going to be precision instruments. Carl
