As I understand it, the modern carb “dip” products are less effective than the old versions.

Any favorite concoctions for soaking a carb for rebuild?

I used lacquer thinner last time in a metal paint can. I’ve read some folks who like methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), but it sounds fairly nasty (probably why it works).

Who carries an ultrasonic cleaner which is big enough for a big carb which won't break the bank?
A friend of mine has a small one for small engine carbs and it is absolutely amazing how well it cleans a carb.

I looked on amazon. The affordable ones MIGHT hold 1/3 of the carb if you break it into throttle body, float bowl, and airhorn. Even that would be questionable.

Let’s assume I can’t afford an ultrasonic cleaner (even though I want one) and we’re talking about the wonderful world of solvents.

JW - it is a short question, with a VERY long answer!

It all depends on the metal of the carburetor. Example, hot caustic lye does a great job on cast iron, but if you put a piece of aluminum in the tank, it will melt. But you won't see it, as you will be lying face down on the floor.

I am going to make NO suggestions other than READ THE LABEL!!!!!

Jon.

I use the aerosol carb cleaner from the FLAPS. After you have the carb disassembled, spray it down all the orifices and then blow it out with compressed air. Using a respirator while doing this is a good idea.

When I was a kid, my Dad didn't have a compressor. It was my job to pump like hell on the tire pump while he used the air to blow the crap out. grin
