The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Engine Shop 40' Starter question.

I have a 40' starter, bell housing and 54' (6v) flywheel on a 54' 235cid. I bench tested the starter and it seemed fine. Once mounted it will not turn the motor over. The clutch mechanism seems to be the trouble. the drive gear engages the flywheel fine, but it spins on the shaft of the starter. Can anyone suggest what part or parts may be the issue? Everything else with the starter seems fine. A rebuilt one is a little spendy. So I'm hoping I can just replace a part. ? It is a 6v starter and I was using a 12v battery. I also didn't have the full voltage contact on the side of the stomp switch connected to the coil. I doubt any of that matters, just saying.

There is a one way clutch in the starter drive. Yours is obviously slipping. It's there to keep the starter armature from overspeeding before you can release the pedal when the engine starts. Your drive gear is slipping in both directions. Change the drive gear assembly and you should be good to go.

Isn't a 40 foot starter a little too big for the engine compartment?

Scout, he's poking fun at how you put the apostrophy (sp) behind the numbers instead of in front where it belongs. What you are indicating is you have a 54 foot 235 in a 40 foot truck chassis. It should look like this "The '54 235 is in a '40 truck chassis.". We all knew what you meant.

Sometimes former schoolteachers just can't resist the urge to point out stuff like that, even auto mechanics teachers! I used to spend a few days of classroom time showing my kids how to fill out repair orders so customers could read them and understand what was being documented! LOL!
