As for the engine, I can’t tell from the photos. If you can get the serial number it won’t take any time at all to find out. Maybe one of the guys can tell from the photos but I am not that skilled.ðŸ›

no way to tell from those pictures, no provision for an oil filter is one clue, but other externals could have been moved to a replacement engine .... need to get the numbers as Tim sez

The 1955 265 V8 did not have an oil filter canister on the rear bottom of the engine. It had an oil filter canister mounted under the thermostat housing. It looked similar to the oil filter canister used on a Stovebolt 6. I believe the 283 V8 engine was not used until 1957. 1956 265 V8's did have the oil filter canister on the bottom of the engine.
As Rick stated, 1955 was the ONLY year SBC to NOT have an oil filter set-up cast to the drivers side bottom of the block, it was remote. So, that's a real easy one to ID.
The serial number will be stamped on the "number pad" in front of the passenger side head.
The casting numbers are hard to see as they are behind the heads on top of the block at the firewall.

I will have to go back and look and take better pictures. I guess it doesn't make too much difference, I am probably going to buy it anyways. Then I will know for sure.
It does have the 265 exhaust manifolds, however the intake is from something later, probably a mid 60's 283. The early engines didn't have that choke stove platform on the intake. Also, it appears that the rocker cover bolt pattern is straight across, which means later than 59. Fred
