The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Driveline Need Help Identifying Rear Axle

I pulled this axle out of my 1950 3600 and listed it for sale. A buyer wanted to know what the ratio was, so I went outside, marked the drum and pinion yoke, then started turning the yoke. To my surprise, the rear drum rotated 360 degrees when the yoke was turned fewer than 2.5 times. I have repeated this test 5 times and the other drum is stationary during the test. I repeated it with the other drum held, and I got the same result. Either I am losing my mind, or this rear end has less than a 2.5:1 ratio??? If I remember correctly, I measured the drum ID to be about 12 inches.

Here are some pics of the axle. I'm not sure what the locknut on the forward side of the pumpkin is with the locknut.... is this a stock 1950 3/4 ton axle??

how about "fewer than 2.5 times" meaning 4.57:1, which would be the standard ratio for the 3600 - other choice is 5.14 if it's actually more than 2.5 times

better way to check the ratio is take the cover off and count the gear teeth

I can't believe that I forgot this...but when you hold one drum stationary, you have to double your result when counting? Thanks Bill

There is a thrust pad on the inside that limits deflection of ring gear.
