I have a 49-3100 with a 4-speed floor shift. Transmission shifts good. However there is a lot of slop and wiggle with the shifter. Are there any pins or bushings that can be purchased to fix this? If so who sells them. Could someone explain how this the repair is done. Thanks

After 52 posts, a post like this should not be in the Welcome Center.

If I understand you question, there is a spring under the "cup".

If you had posted this query is a regular forum, I could post the image at the bottom of this post.

No problem - someone moved it to the correct place.

Does that illustration, below, with the spring help?

First of all the SM420 is sloppy to begin with. Always has been, always will be. Just like my arthritis, it won't go away.

But to tighten the wiggle waggle a little:
As Tim indicates, there is a cup that has a bayonet type retaining. With a spring under it. (turn CCW to loosen). You will have to push down on the cup, against spring pressure, when turning. This is hard, if it's easy, something is wrong/worn out. Under this cup is the spring which applies hold down pressure on a ball and socket. Ball is part of shift lever and the socket is part of the top of the trans.

Possible causes for excess looseness:
1. The spring is sprung and no longer has force.
2. The roll pins that are part of the bayonet function are worn or broken.
3. The ball is welded to the shift lever, that weld could be cracked/broken.
4. The nose on the shift lever, that operates the sliders, is worn.
5. Slider openings worn.

Much of this can be seen by taking off the shifter lever and examining all parts and peeking into the hole for other wear/obvious problems.
Many of the parts mentioned are available from Jeep vendors and Novak. Maybe the shifter nose can be add metal welded or find a donor on Ebay or Craigslist.
Analyzing is first.
