Finally at the point of installing the toe board. It is located in place, loosely bolted. The throttle rod penetrates through the to bpard and the gas pedal is mounted. It looks to me like the ball end of the throttle rod just snaps into the piece of "U" shaped sheet metal with 2 holes in each arm of the "U", mounted on the under side of the pedal. Tried that and is not going to be easy. Is this right approach?

Hi Bob,

It sounds like you are trying to make a 1941-42 throttle rod fit on a 1943-46 pedal. The "ball" type throttle linkage should fit into a corresponding molded rubber "socket" on the early style pedal. Later versions use a linkage that has a 90 degree bend that goes through the pedal portions (2) and is secured by a cotter pin. I think I can find an image of an early pedal if you are interested.

Paul,

Thank you very much. I can easily visualize what you are talking about. I would be far more interested in finding the correct throttle rod. Any ideas?

I am using the later version, the one that takes the cotter pin.

Bob,

Are you using the 1946 "216"?

Bob,
If you had told us this at the start of your question it would have saved a lot of time.
The pedal configurations go by motor year and size and not by truck year.
You need to buy the pedal for the '55 ( assuming you have the linkage from the '55).
J.C. has these pedals P/N FL115 photo attached.

If you do not want the '55 pedal then you will have to modify your linkage (cut & weld connector) to fit the pedal you want to use.

Thank you very much - I humbly beg for your forgiveness. I had no idea that this would be an issue. So, based on the info in this thread and your last photo, I need to order a new pedal but should be able to use my existing rod - it has a "ball end".

Bob,
If the linkage you have is a 55 the pedal will work. Check the mounting configuration (to the toe board) on the 55 pedal VS the 46 pedal you have. If it is not the same you will have more problems.
Good luck.

Bob,

Since the 55 pedal is two generations distant from your truck; it is rather a crap shoot to expect the pedal hinge bracket, throttle socket location, and toeboard bushing on your truck will line up. The bushing on the toeboard is not very forgiving relative to differences in up/down/left/right position. Perhaps someone can get you some measurements from a 55 pedal? The throttle linkage length is different on splash oiler engines vs insert bearing engines as the pivot on the engines changed locations. I grafted a 1958 engine throttle shaft to a 1942 pedal (socket type) with some angle modifications, no change in distance but it was an adjustable linkage apparently used on large trucks in 1958. It may be more simplistic and relatively original to extend/modify your present shaft to fit your 1946 pedal. There is a solution, you just need to find it!

I ordered the pedal for a '55 and it appears to fit the '46 toe board pretty well. Time will tell if I have to mod the fit a little to improve operation, but I think it will do.

That would be awesome if the 55 pedal fits. If so, let us know as it would be great information for others.

I will keep you posted. Today, after finally re-installing my radiator et al, I went out to test run the engine to check out an overheat problem (separate thread). In order to get things started and up to a good idle, I did have to work the throtle a bit. All went smooth and no sticking. Still a few days from actually putting the truck in gear and moving around the yard.
