It looks like it had been sitting in acid - the unused inside threads were smooth and the end that was threaded into the block was missing a significant amount of material. Does any one know what might be going on?

Ethylene Glycol can do that under certain circumstances when the corrosion inhibitors are depleted and the pH drops to the acidic range.

Can you tell me more? The drain I am talking about - lower, rear corner of the block, driver side - sounds like the same one you are talking about.
