I am getting into another AD style truck project and I have found a company that makes what looks like a bolt on overdrive for the stock SM420 4 speed transmission. I have had 5 speeds for many years now and they do help in the top end of things...I know a T5 swap might be a good deal to but there seems to be a lot work to get it done....T5's in my neck are non-existence so a ebay find will be about the only option... '37 GMC T-18 w/ DD 4-53T, RTO-610, 6231 aux., '95 GMC running gear, full disc brakes, power steering, 22.5 wheels and tires.
'47 GMC 1 ton w/ 302, NP-540, 4wd, full width Blazer front axle.
'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed.
'55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.

What drivetrain is in it now (engine, transmission, driveshaft, and rear end)? The truck right now is 1948 1 ton...the chassis it is going on is a 1984 C10 1/2 ton with a gear set of 3.73's, the engine is either going to be a 1974 235 cubic in 6 cylinder or a 4.3 liter out of a 1987 S10....the only transmission I have so far is the stock SM420 4 speed with a creeper 1st gear....I was debating doing the S10 T5 speed but so far have not found anything local to pick from... Or a 235 for that matter...
It's not a '48 1 ton after that swap, so no point in keeping the SM420 or the 235. I don't think they built a 235 in 1974 either.... set the bourbon down and get yourself a modern engine and tranny; that's way too much work to put into a mod project, and then end up keeping that cranky, old drivetrain!

I picked up a late 1990's NV3500 5 speed for it....still hoping the 4.3 will be a good choice...trying to figure out a set of hanging pedals for it now...was trying to do a hodge podge from something newer .....thinking an aftermarket might be a better set up in the long run...trying to save money on these truck builds will bite in the butt every time...
