Does anyone know a good way to clean out the draft tube? Mine has some nasty stuff in it and I would like to get it out. Is there a cleaner you can use? Thanks

It depends how thick/heavy the caked grease/goop is.

Some people burn them out.
Some people soak in kerosene.
Some people take off the "cap" and clean the parts.
Some people do a combination of the above.

The fibrous contents is supposedly horse hair.

The 216 and early 235 engines are not "splash oilers" -- this is a splash oiler.

Is was thinking of putting it in a parts cleaning solvent. Will the top cap go back on if you take it off? It looks pressed on.

I wouldn't pop the cap. Soaking it is your best option. I would use a eco-friendly degreaser. the only reason I suggest the eco-friendly is I assume it would be less caustic in case the fibrous contents is in fact horse hair.

A piece of wire or suitable stick with a rag tied on the end should do a suitable job.

'55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.
