I would like to repaint the chrome emblems on my 58, 3100. I plan to mask off the unpainted areas in general, paint the emblems, and wipe off the excess paint from the areas that shouldn't have paint. But, I was hoping for recommendations on prep and what type/brand of paint to use.

I also plan on repainting my rims and hubcaps. Any recommendations on paint brand/type for this project would be appreciated as well.

Lumbergh,

How about 'one-shot' sign painters paint. Comes in many colors, small quantities and is UV resistant. Most auto paint stores have it.

Actually, what I'm talking about is the painted portions of the hood emblem and fender emblems. They are chrome with blacked out sections. Basically, I am looking for advice on prepping the metal surface prior to painting it, and any recommendations on paint that will adhere well to the chrome, have a good semigloss look, and will last.

For the hubcaps, I was thinking of using a rattle can of white appliance paint.

Atomarc:

Thanks for the recommendation. I didn't see it in the link, but do the One Shot Paints come in rattle cans? I've had some bad experiences with trying to hand paint metal. :o

The one shot sign painter's paint is in a can, use a brush to apply-it is meant to stick to glass so it works well on chrome. It levels out really well so brush marks are almost completely gone when dry., Brian

Lumbergh,

Brian speaks the truth...I think it could be thinned and sprayed with a air brush too.

Oh yeah, take a paper towel, fold it so you have a pointy corner, dampen it w/thinner,reducer, mineral spirits what have you & use it to carefully remove paint from unwanted areas before it dries. If there is an area that is really tiny, use a broom straw(yes, that broom straw-yank one from a corn broom) Brian

Thanks for letting me know. I was indeed worried about brush strokes. I had planned on using a folded paper towel for removing the excess, but thanks for mentioning it. I guess I will go to the nearby auto paint store at lunch so I can get started tonight.

Once again, any recommendations for the hubcaps and rims? I was thinking that the Black POR15 might work on the rims as well as the frame. Or would it look really poor? I know brush marks shouldn't be a problem anyway based on my use of the POR15 Pelucid stuff on the bed wood.

I recently did both the emblem and hub cabs. One shot is a premium paint for this application. I simply cleaned and sanded with 220 grit paper. I then used self etching primer. After masking off and painting I had a few areas were paint seeped past the edge of the masking tape. I took my Dremmel tool with a nylon wheel and was able to buff away the excess paint to a sharp clean edge. I used a brush. the paint smoothed out to a mirror finish. They have a One Shot blue that is a near perfect match for the Chevy Blue. I would not use appliance paint. I have done a lot of research and planned on using white appliance paint to redo my white painted bumpers and grill because of the hard finish. Everything I have seen is it does not do well outdoors. It fades and yellows quickly when exposed to regular sunlight.
