Was there a reason they used oil bath? It seems a paper filter would be easier and cleaner.

Many people convert to a paper filter.
Some people think it is easier to replace compared to cleaning the oil bath element and base, and putting in new oil.

The oil bath was the best technology they had back then. It was a great improvement over the mesh type that you had to clean & reoil frequently. The dry filter was developed for dirt track racing. Engines were short lived from the dust.

I'll look into that. My '52 and '54 have different canisters, so I don't know which it will fit.
