I replaced the upper mast bearing on my '40 Chev. I did not lubricate it where the shaft fits. Should I have and, if so, what do you use? The reason I ask is that it sticks. Doesn't take much to overcome it but for sure does not feel right.

Is there a coil spring under the steering wheel? That is what sets the upper bearing preload on the later models. (I am not familiar with a '40.)

Nope, no coil spring Carl. I first thought the steering wheel was touching the mast causing the issue. I took the wheel off and can rotate the shaft and get the problem of the shaft hanging up a bit on the bearing a bit.
