Thinking about some door lettering. Any website recommendations with design-it-yourself capability? doityourselflettering.com is the first I've looked at, seems to run about $35 per door for what I'm after.

Professionally painted--YES would love it, but don't intend it to be permanent or super-expensive. Had great results with vinyl lettering during Shelley's charity drive days, so that'll do just fine.

Are you looking for vinyl, graphic generated decals? If so, they will be A LOT less than painted.If you are looking for the natural, time specific type, painted is the only way to go in my opinion.

Vinyl can look pretty authentic if you don't examine it with a magnifying glass, and alot less trouble than finding just the right stencils to paint it myself.

And I'd be the one to do it. Think back to the early '50's, if Joe wanted Joe's Garage on the door, Joe likely did it himself, perhaps with some stencils. Not the overly stylized custom art we'd hire today.

Again, don't want permanent, don't want fancy. Have considered latex because it'll be easier to remove 5 yrs from now when I get tired of it. Or sooner.

They also have the vinyl type paint that you can spray on then when you want to change it it will peel off.
Up north here people have been using it on the nice rims to protect them in the winter months,then peel off in the spring

Just finished this door today in 3m vinyl - designed online from an outfit in Florida.. Hard to tell in pic but they are 3d in black to right side.

I have been thinking about doing the same thing. I was considering making my own stencils and trying the spray on/peel off finishes. I have been trying to figure out if you can get a faded/weathered look with the peel off stuff. I would like to see pictures of what ever you come up with for your door.

I have not tried the peel off stuff and did not know if it behaved like normal paint until it dried? Can you spray it on and wipe it off/thin in areas to get a weather look, fuax finish it, etc....

Would this get more responses in the paint forum even though vinyl decals are being considered as an option?

I've played around a bit with doityourselflettering.com. Like the ease of creating your own but it's hard to know how the colors will look in real life. Would be around $80 total for what I want, which ain't bad. Will be sure and post what I come up with, although it could be another month or so.

As far as do it yourself goes, vinyl is easier. Painting takes more technique but if it's done right it looks really good.

Woody aka Czechman, a Bolter from years back has a collection of door art, here may give you some more ideas. Have fun and good luck

I went to one of those vynil sign places, and had a stencil made. Had one for each door, he simply hit print twice. I placed them on my doors, painted in the letters with "one shot" sign lettering paint. Came out perfect, just don't pull the stencil off too soon.
