My 1/2 ton truck 1953 with a 12 volt system has aftermarket directionals with a 4 way flasher. When I used the flasher today it blew the 5 amp fuse..... Is that enough fuse for a setup like this ? ...I replaced the fuse and directionals worked but when I used the flasher it blew the fuse again....is it a problem with two low a fuse or a short inside the unit or something else ?

Start with a 10 amp fuse. If you're trying to flash 4 bulbs at once, that's definitely going to be more than 5 amps. If you're simply selecting a right or left turn, you might draw less than 5 amps, but it's going to be pretty close to maxed out even then. Most fuses need a 20% surge capacity over the anticipated constant load.
