I seem to be missing something from the rear center mount for my hood. I have the “U” shaped hold down that is bolted on top of the cowl, but there doesn’t seem to be a mating piece in the center of the hood at the hinge. At the front it looks like there is some sort of a stub rod or maybe the hinge pin itself that protrudes into the front bull nose/ support bracket.

Is there a hinge pin / rod that extends the full length of the hinge and maybe extends out both ends ?? If so mine could be broken and too short.

Are there two shorter pins that fit into either end. If so I can probably copy the front one to make a new rear one.

Best question …….Anyone have a really cleaver way of lifting the hood by your self ??

Assuming your 41 is exactly the same as my 46, there s/b one single rod/hinge pin that runs the length of the hood and out a bit at both ends of the hinge.

The ends then go into the u-shaped holddown on the cowl, and the bullnosed pieces atop the radiator support.

As for lifting the hood by yourself... Well that is indeed a challenge. I found about the only way to do it was grab it with one hand on each the front and back, right where the center hinge is. Your grip kinda needs to be centered on the hinge.

This supports both sides of the top of the hood and allows you to carry it without it folding in in the middle.

It's still a bit cumbersome, and the side panels can be a PITA but it seems to work fairly well.

The only real problems I had were getting it in and out of the bed of the truck (where I'd stored it) by myself, and one occasion where the hinge pin started coming out and the hood started to separate into 2 pieces.

What I do is lock the pass. side of the hood then open the drivers side up. Put it at almost a 90 degree angle and slide off the drivers side the length of the hood hinge. In other words take one half off at a time but you have to do the drivers side first as that is the side that slides into the other. I can do it this way now as I don't have the bull nose on yet.

the same end yours is. I made a pc and put it in,
and then bolted the u clamp down. Works ok.

Well…..I’ve had a close look at mine now and I think there must be a part missing. If those ‘46’s have a long hinge pin they are different than my ’41. On mine there is no long hinge pin, as it turns out the passenger’s side is actually wrapped around the driver’s side to form the hinge. Either side can be slid lengthwise off of, or out of the other.

Having lined the two hood sides up with each other I can see that the inside wrap (passenger’s side) extends forward about ¾” to slip into the hollow back side of the bull nose radiator support.

Now the problem, there is no extension at the rear of the hood. I have the “U” shaped clamp but there is nothing for it to hold down.

Is it possible that I’m missing a short stub section of a hinge pin that is just for the rear of the hood? This is puzzling as the pin would have to be about 5/32” to slip inside the curl of the passenger’s side and that’s kinda small to hold the whole back of the hood.

Dad6timz would it be possible to look closely at yours and let me know the lengths of the curl (hinge part) of passenger’s side and of the driver’s side.

Kip The drivers side is 35 inches and the pass side is 36 1/2 inches. The pass side curl is even with the back edge of the hood. When I put the hood on I put the pass side on first and slide the curl into the u shaped clamp so that the hood fits properly to the cowl area. I then slide the drivers side in until it fits properly.

Why did I know that would be the answer Just measured mine, sure enough the driver’s side is 35 The passenger’s side sticks out ½ inch in the front (looks ok here), but ends ¼ inch up inside of the driver’s side at the back. I’m sure that when I slip them apart I’ll find it broken off about an inch at the back.

This looks to be a major problem,

If it is broken you could buy a small steel rod and slide it inside the curl and zap it with a mig welder. That would give you the length you need.

Yes That's been the plan in my head. I think I'll have to make a stepped pin, as the end that will go inside of the curl needs to be about 5/32 and the outside (under the "U" clamp) about 5/16.

When I get that far I'll let you all know how well the plan works

My 39's is broke off too.. someone stuffed a cut off bolt into it.... works so far, but I've got the hood strapped down to keep it from flapping in the wind.

Rusty, how fast are you going ?? I can't tell for sure but from my several times around the block I wiuld put her top end at about 55.
