I traded some junk I had for back up engine that I'm pretty sure is a 235 from a 55 2nd series. But I'm not 100% sure as some of the numbering has me confused. The engine block has the number 022977IT557 behind the distributor and the number 3836233 cast into the engine. The casting code leads me to believe it is from 55-57. The distributor number leads me to a 55. But what does the "IT" stand for.

On the head the outside casting number is 3835913 with GM7 under it. Inside under the valve cover has Con12 and D150.

Am I on the right track to thinking this is a 55 second series engine? Any help much appreciated!

I'm thinking your engine is a 1955 block that came in a car with a powerglide trans from the factory. It seems the head is a off a 1960 engine.
D = April
15 = 15th
0 = 1960

Somebody else may respond confirming my thoughts or providing different info.

Thanks for your input Cablesmill. I'm curious to what exactly makes you think its a car engine? If its from a car with a power glide then it sounds like I have a hydraulic lifter 235 which is a bummer as I was thinking it was solid lifters since I was told it came out of a panel truck. I see on this website that the casting number of 3836233 says its a 55 second series truck:

But I cant seem to find what the letters "IT" designate.

Are you sure that's an I, not a 1? I think the T means the engine was built at the Tonwanda plant in NY.

I did a google search and found my info. Can you get the casting date code off the block? That'd tell the year of the block. The S/n has me boggled.

Look at your engine serial number again to see it the last digit is really an "X" and not a 7. The 1955-2 3100 pickup trucks had the last 4 dogits as either F55X or T55X (F = Flint, T = Tonawanda Engine Plant).

Your unit number is 0229771 (starting with 1001 at each plant).

The letter "eye" was used as number "one".

Thanks for the help guys. So the capital letter i is used for the number one and is the last number of the serial number..ok tha works for me. The capital T is for Tonwanda plant. The 55 is for 1955 which seems right as the casting number next to the starter is C1055....so march 10, 1955. That last number is in fact not a number 7 but the letter Z. I scrubbed some more on the serial number and I can see a faint line that is certainly the letter Z and not the number 7. So the last question for you guys is what does the Z stand for? Thanks for all the help! You guys are great!
