Hi guys, pretty much got all the body work and have primed everything. I am working on my hood now, got the high build primer all knocked down and even with guide coat and is ready to be sealed. In other words I am happy with it, but I notices in a couple places I can see the etch primer exposed in a couple small places plus a little bare metal about the size of a pencil eraser. Can I just use some rattle can etch primer to cover that little bare part and will my sealer cover the other area where the high build is thin? I could just put another coat of high build on it and scratch it up to seal.

Do you have pictures of your high spots ? I think if your that far along and you still have metal or bare spots showing your paint will be waivey

Your best bet is to have any bare steel covered up with HB primer. To shortcut it now with a crappy rattle can of so called primer would bite you in the arse. It'd be like painting your truck with a rattle can spray paint after putting all the work into it that you have... a complete failure.

The shiny steel spot is showing because it's just high enough to have the primer sanded off so there's two ways to address this, one right and one wrong. The wrong way would be to HB prime the area enough to bury the high spot. The correct way is to get the high spot lower than it is... a body hammer, perhaps some finishing putty, then HB primer. This is likely something you've already been doing anyway so should be fairly straight forward.

I am at a loss about what you would use as a "sealer" over HB primer. The only thing I know of that goes over HB primer is paint.

Sorry should of said that the bare metal is on the edge of the hood so it is not a high spot just my knuckle-headed-ness with the sanding block. Thank you both for your input, I was told to seal it before the color coat to keep the color uniform, I should of also said it is a single stage paint, not base coat/clearcoat.

sstock, did you epoxy the bare metal before the HB primer? If so, I would get a small artist brush and touch up the edges. Then HB primer again then sealer. What sealer you use depends on the HB primer and the single stage. I would stay away from a rattle can since it may likely not be compatible with what you have or the single stage.

I didnt use epoxy primer on top of the metal, should of in hind sight. The entire sheet metal was brought to bare metal then etch primed, the high build on top of that etc.
All products are compatible and purchased through summit.

Spray some more 2K HB primer on your burn through and gently sand so it's flat without burning through again.
For years I've been in the paint and body business and have never heard or seen anyone sealing a 2K HB primer before painting with any kind of paint including bc/cc or single stage urethane.

If you plan on painting over old paint where there is no HB primer, you may want to put a sealer on those areas as a barrier between the old paint and the new paint as the new technology stuff is "hotter" and would likely react badly to the original coating.

I won't say not to seal as I am not familiar with what summit is selling, but I will say you should read the TDS (technical data sheet) thoroughly before applying a sealer. If it says to use a sealer, you haven't used 2K HB primer... hang on!!! are you using lacquer primer by chance??? Was there an activator for it or was it just "air dry"? If so, that's a whole other issue... I take back everything I've said if it's lacquer primer.

Here is what I am using, it is a 2 part high build urethane: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-lvsp314g/overview/

Here is the sealer recommended: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-lvsp422g/overview/

Thanks so much for the help.Paint is a confusing ordeal for somebody who is not in the paint world and a do it yourselfer.
