I'm working on my 41 3/4 ton with the objective of getting it running and stopping on it's own....before the end of June.
Put a 350/700r4 and went to a one-piece driveshaft. I know the 350 is good and I had the 700r4 rebuilt. Now I'm on the the brakes.

The front axle and rear were changed out by PO to 55-59. With the help of 3B, the rear axle was determined to be HO52. I went looking for 12" brakes for it and found them difficult to come by...as well as other parts. So, after researching, determined it would be better to go with a 14 bolt, as recommended by Grigg and others.

So, I would appreciated some help from you guys to search for the 14 bolt I need.

I understand I need one from a C&C because the wms-wms width is 63.5". I read there was a difference between the 72-88 and 89+ yrs., but don't know what.

What years C&C will work? Are they in the P20's and P30's?
I understand I will need to relocate the spring perches.
I put a drum/drum power brake system on with 1-1/4 bore master cylinder. Will that be OK with the 14 bolt rear?
Will I need to change the U joints or will they match up from the HO52?

Anything else I need to be aware of???

As always, thanks for your help.

I just put a 14 bolt srw from a mid 70's 3/4 ton pickup in my 46 3/4 ton. I only had to change the axle shock mount locations and add a mount on the frame.

You may find a C&C spring perches are too narrow for the stock 41 3/4 ton spring location.

I went dually on an SRW but singles may require a spacer for better fender fitment.

Thanks for the link to your thread. Very helpful!

Why did you go with a SRW and then change out to longer bolts for dually's rather than going with a C&C to begin with?

I plan on going dually...have 19.5" 8 lug to go on it.

Also, what is your the gear ratio in yours?

On a C&C for a dually the spring perches could not be moved out enough on the axle to fit it on the 46 3/4 ton springs -- which defied moving. I wanted to keep it as tight as possible for the duallies and I wanted to keep the inside dual outboard of the step bed sides. The c20 axle was perfect. I have the fenders and will build 10 inch spacers out of 14 gauge. But this axle would easily work for a single and depending on wheel back spacing may need a spacer to place correctly under the rear fender.

3.73 gear-- did not have gov loc --- was ok either way.
216 with 4 speed --used the stock 3/4 ton mc.

I am not saying a van or van cab/box srw would not work but the c20 did not require even moving the perches.

I did my best to align the duals on the srw but I do run less air on the outside duals than the insides. I am not worried about tire heat on a truck running 45-50 mph for 20 miles hauling a lawn chair. 8-)

My HO52 WMS-WMS is 62". The C&C dually is 63.5"
I measure 44" to the outside of my springs (2" springs, so 42" o.c.) with another 5" on each side to the backing plate.

I thought I read somewhere the spring perches on a C&C 3/4 ton was 42.5" and 40.5" for one ton. Either one would not require moving the perches more than 1" on each side.

I put my duals (8.5 x 19.5) on my HO52 and outside the tires measures 80". If a C&C fits, that will become approx. 82".

I think we have the same goal: to keep it as tight as possible. I have rear fenders too (that need work) but was hoping not to add 10" to them.

What am I missing? Thanks again for your advise...much appreciated.

I looked at an 81 or so C30 8 lug drw c&C and measured but could not move the axle perches out far enough to mount to the 46 3/4 ton springs without the backing plates interfering so I may be mistaken and there is another 14 bolt that fits better. I was looking at a bare chassis taking measurements from the top.

Understood.

When I began researching a week or so ago, one of the first things I read was that there a many different types of 14 bolts, with various specs. They said make sure you know what you are looking for.

That's why I was being such a PITA by asking you all of those questions. You have been very helpful and I thank you for that.

BTW, your truck looks great!!

Hey VFW, thanks for the compliment and good luck on your truck. Your questions were good and genuine. I use the web a lot and there are a couple guys at the cruisins that know a lot. Then I build something off the wall sometimes. Then my 83 year old uncle changes his mind on direction. I admit there is a lot I do not know just ask my wife.

When I get in the mood I have 2 doors ready to paint then other pieces plus bed and I have a nice 216 that I resealed and painting to put in the 46 replacing the 235 for something else.

But today I am taking the 67 k10 to a car and tractor show in Lynchburg, OH.
