My son was helping me put it back in and decided it was easier to back off the clamp and install the bracket, then the distributor. I don't think its indexed correctly, so I'm checking from square one. My question is if the points should be open or closed at TDC? My senior moment tells me no then I think yes. Hate it when I can't remember info I haven't used for years! Thanks

Static time using the pointer on the bell housing and the BB in the flywheel. #1 cylinder on compression stroke. The light should just come on. I use a home made T-handle crank to turn the engine over.
