In line with my previous question about oil choices for my '67 250 cid engine, I find that the oil filter is placed in a horizontal position, instead of a more preferable vertical position.

Is there an aftermarket device that would allow for positioning the filter vertically so as to prevent a less-messy removal of the filter during oil changes, and also prevent the new filter oil from splashing out when screwing on the new filter?

I don't like running newly-oiled engines with a dry filter. I haven't changed the oil on this truck yet, but plan to do so soon for the first time.

Seems that GM didn't think much of DIY mechanics.

I think a Ford engineer designed that engine... seriously, though, I know I have seen adapters for chevy spin ons that allows you to run filter lines.

Filter adapters for Chevy 250 Or, just get really good at filling the filter and flipping it over and screwing it on really fast...!

You don't need to worry one second about starting that engine with a bone dry oil filter. Everything else will get oil pressure on start up at the same time the oil filter is getting filled up. Plenty of oil volume/pressure to go around.
I feel your pain on removing the full one when you are changing it, but all oil filter spill some oil when you take them off.
I say, if you are going to make a mess, might as well make it a big one.

If you punch a hole in the bottom side of the filter ,the oil will run out into a pan/bucket that you put under the filter to catch the oil. Remove the filter, fill new one half full then install. That should solve the problem.

It's pretty simple to fabricate a V-shaped piece of sheet metal to mount under the filter to channel the spillage to a drain pan. Then do the half-full thing on the new filter, and if you're really anal-retentive about it, disable the ignition and spin the engine without starting it a little to finish filling the filter and pressurizing the system. If you don't goose the throttle on startup, none of that should be necessary.

The cost and effort of installing an adapter is hardly worth it for something that is done a couple times a year. Some of the brilliant engineers of foreign autos of late have the oil dump directly on the catalytic converter when the filter is removed.

Not just foreign vehicles, the domestics have gotten very bad about oil filter location on their late models as well. Sometimes I wonder what those "engineers" are smoking.
