Hey guys new to the forum, Larry helped me out in swapping a 4.10 3rd member to a 5.14. I also have a 4.57 3rd member. Not sure if thats something any of you guys need? If so I can trade and pick up a 2nd 5.14 as I would like to have a spare. Im located in So cal so you know for shipping purposes. Anything far might ruin the deal but I know business to business from So cal to Wisconsin was about 100 bucks.

Thanks,
Chris

In the next few months, I will have a 5.14 third member from a '49 3800 available. I'm in Central Texas. Not sure what it is worth, or if it is worth shipping. I know it is worth scrap metal at least.

Trey -- You know what to look for in junkyards, right?

If you already have a 5.14 third member, Mrf1002u can hook you up with a swap for 4.10. If not, you have to start checking out the junkyards for a donor. See the tech tip on this upgrade for details about how to find the right center section you need.

Have fun!

I have a 5.14 that is good to go if someone needs it. Another one is waiting for removal from a 1 ton to replace with a 4.10. No need to find a 4.10 for me. If your group needs one or both I can let them go. Tom

Hi John, yes I do know what to look for.....been looking but to no avail. I have a couple of 4.56's in pieces, but do not have a 5.14 I want to part with at this time.

Thanks,

I could use a 4.56. Do you have a matched ring and pinion and a good pinion bearing? That would save shipping compared to the whole pumpkin.

Tommy, both of the sets I have are matched sets. Do not have the pinion bearings. PM me with your address and I will see what the shipping will be.

Thanks, Trey

I am also looking to purchase a clean set of 4.10 gears. Mine are trashed so I would not be able to swap. If anyone has a set please let me know.

I have a 1950 gmc 1 ton I have retired from farm use and need a better road gear now that we are going on the road. I have found an old trailer that has the 10 bolt rear end and 8 bolt wheels. It is a early 60's chevy with coil springs and leaf spring helpers that look to be factory installed. Any ideas to what the gear ratio might be? Due to the weather and it being hard to get out I would like to know if its worth pulling out.

Best methods are counting the teeth or jack up a wheel and count turns, each followed by some math.
Checking it out in person is probably less effort and time and more reliable than searching and speculating on the net.

Good luck!

Just popping in to say Howdy. Haven't been around a while. Glad to see this thread is still alive. Still busy with non-truck projects.

Is 5.13:1 the only ratio the early ones had? I have been thinking that my 51 gmc 1 ton sports 5.38s. I have found a chunk from a late 60s pickup with 4.11s so I'm fine there, just curious if the 5.38 is a possibility.
Thanks

If this is still an active topic I most certainly have a set of 5.14s I'd love to swap for 4.10s

I have found 4:57's I currently have 5:14's in 1 Ton Dually ..

I Feel like 55 Mph better to get to shows with , so 4:10 might be a better Fit . .

So I have a 4.57 center section and a 4.10 center. Both open and in good shape. I also have an older style housing with slip on drums. All I’m looking for is a 5.13 center, preferably with a load bolt and in in good shape.

I switched my 1 ton from 5:14 to 4:10 and have the typical 4 speed. It works great around town, but has a hard time an any grade or hill pulling the hill in 4th. FYI

I've been following this 4:10 swap thread and others that are similar, this is the first time I've read about the 4:10 and the issue of pulling hills in fourth gear. Appreciate the information as I've been contemplating the swap. Maybe some other Bolters will share their experience?

Sure, it won't pull as hard in 4th on a hill with 4.10 as it will with 5.14, that's expected.
In my experience it still does just fine, I once passed a semi truck headed up a good hill on I-64, 4th gear, probably 55-65 MPH. That was flat out and didn't need to down shift.

Other steeper hills on local roads you'll down shift, but not always, and I don't see that as an issue.

There will always be hills you have to down shift on, depending on how steep, long, and how fast you can or can't go.

I say go for the swap and don't look back.

If you drive along in high gear and absentmindedly press in the clutch and reach for one more higher gear... It means you're not geared to fast.
I still do this with 4.10 axle gears sometimes.. but not all the time like with 5.14.

Dusty -- For awhile, I ran the 216/4.10/4-speed SM420/17-inch wheel combo on my 3804. My truck could maintain 70-ish on a flat just fine (but you could tell that was all there was wink ) but as soon as I hit a headwind (or even much of a breeze, let alone wind) or any kind of a hill, it went to 55. A real hill meant dropping a gear. or two ... Not really a show stopper, just more of a slight annoyance at times. And in the back of my mind, I was always worried about what running at the upper right corner of the "Horsepower/thrust Curve" was doing to my valiant splasher 216...

Then I switched to a 261 and ... well, I no longer have these issues wink And the still-good 216 is sleeping peacefully in the corner... for now ...

Just my data point FWIW.

John

After messing around with rear ends I found the switching to an overdrive transmission was the answer. I can actually up shift while climbing a grade, and even when I climb a serious grade and have to down shift the gears are closer together so not much speed is lost. I have a 4.57 rear with a t 5 and 5800 lb 1 ton. and the original 235.
Its by no means a power house, but I can keep up with traffic.

Thanks John and Panel Fan - you know, I think I'll eventually get the 4.10 put in and just see how it goes. Right now I've got so much left to do to get mine back on the road that I need to stop the future planning and get back to work on the truck. I appreciate you guys sharing your experiences.

This is not the Swap Meet.

Either contact Ronnie via email or Private Message, or, place a part for sale ad in the Swap Meet.

If you are trying to Swap your 4.10 for a 5.14, you should get a few "takers/swappers".

Or contact Larry (The OP for this thread) as he was the guy who set up the pumpkin trades for a lot of us.
