I have a 52 1/2 ton pickup with a three speed #591615. Will a transmission #591747 from a car fit without modifications? What is the difference between the car and truck transmission. I am thinking of purchasing the car transmission, rebuild it, and then swap it out with my current transmission. No down time. Thanks

I believe the car transmission has a different bellhousing bolt pattern and won't bolt into the truck.

OK, Now is there any place that I can get parts for a transmission rebuild? I checked with drivetrain.com, and they say no parts for my tranny. Would the parts inside the car transmission be the same as the ones in mine?

The internal parts that wear are interchangeable such as the synchronizer and shift forks. Although the case has the same casting number, the internals changed around 52 or 53. The early one can be identified by 2 lugs on the synchronizer and the later one has 4 lugs. Synchronizers are getting very hard to find. If you are lucky, the passenger transmission has a good synchronizer. If your transmission has 2 lugs and the donor has 4 you can grind two of them off and it will work.

Make a couple more posts and we can communicate by private message. I think I can help you out in your search for a transmission and/or parts. I think 4 or 5 posts is the magic number for full access to the features of the forum.

I think I will pull the side cover off my current tranny, and see if there is any visible damage.

OK..I am confusing myself..Background..I purchased the 52 over 30 years ago. Engine was shot, so I took motor out of 61 chevy car and installed in the 52. Now, I still have the torque tube drive shaft, so I am assuming I still have the 52 transmission. The number on my tranny is 591615. Would this be the truck tranny? Next, should there be a mount/support at the tailshaft? There is a brace that goes under the tailshaft, but there is no mount or support on the tailshaft. Third, I took the side cover off last night, and the 2/3 shift fork slot is badly worn. Would this be the cause of the pop out of 3rd gear, or a symptom of other problems? I know this is a long post, but I thought I would try to keep everything together. I think the date code is D280 as far as I can tell. Thanks for any answers.

591615 is the casting number for 1948 thru 1954 GM truck transmissions. It could either contain the earlier 2 lug synchronizer or the later 4 lug synchronizer. Chances are good that it is the earlier style, but the only way to know for sure is pull out the input shaft and look at the synchronizer. The shift forks were notorious for wearing and so was the synchronizer. Shift forks are relatively easy to find. Synchros are hard to find and expensive when you do find them.

Thanks. The 2/3 shift fork is worn pretty bad. I have another post with a picture of it.
