In the continuing saga of my 216 re build, the newest problem is serious misses at higher RPM. It idles great at 450 -500 RPM. Have run the engine less than two hours total over two weeks of working on this.

I have checked and replaced the Vacuum advance, timed with a vacuum gauge and checked vacuum out of the base of the carb. I have gauges installed ay both places.

pressure at the manifold is about 17-18,
pressure out of the base is about 14 - 15
New plastic Carb base, Carter YF carb.

checked Timing ball with a light and it does not give me a good setting

During the rebuild, checked the casting numbers to insure all were compatible and designed for the block, insured the timing gears were properly aligned.

Distributor and cap installed correctly and checked several times.. New points, plugs, condenser

Questions are:
- Bad distributor shaft/bushing?
- Coil on the way out?
- Carb issues?

Any thoughts?

I have a new insulator and will relook the gasket.

Thanks, this makes sense.

Mike

There is a vacuum port/hole in the base of the carburetor that needs to be open for flow.

There are usually multiple "cut-outs", so that the gasket/bakelite-insulator can be placed in any orientation and the needed opening will line up.

What do you mean when you said
"checked Timing ball with a light and it does not give me a good setting" is your timing bouncing around?

points are new.

Ball is steady, but with advancing the distributor, the problem gets a little better.

I am going to relook the holes, gaskets and passage situation at the base of the carb.

Clean the new points. A lot of them come with something on the contact surfaces. You can turn the ignition switch on and open and close the points with a screw driver to see the spark at the contact surfaces.

I have done that. I worked through some spark issues earlier.

Thanks though.
