The 6 cyl 235 just went south. Started installation of a small block 350 and 3 speed automatic tranny.
Any suggestions on which differential I should/could use for an open
drive line?
My truck is a '51 1/2 ton Chev panel truck.

Late 70's Camero/Firebird is what I have had success with. Weld on new spring perches and your good to go. Go to the HiPo Forum and look at the list at the top, also, just a reminder that since you have "crossed the line", future posts about your project should probably go in that forum.👍🏻🛠

drum to drum, I just had to weld on a couple spring perches, have a driveshaft cut down to length to fit between a saginaw 4 spd. and was ready to roll!
Very simple swap.

Thanks Marty...... I try to track one down.
Pulled the spring perches off of the old axle, so I'm ready to re-weld them
on a new axle.
Thks,
JB

Spring perches are cheap. Why try to cob up used ones?

Were the perches you remove the ones from a torque tube? They won't work. They have that rubber bushing in them and will flex real bad if welded to an open drive rear end.
If your 3 speed auto has a final drive ratio of 1 to 1 (no overdrive), you may want to look for a 3.08 rear end for better highway RPM.

I bought a pair of new spring perches off the shelf at my "small town, family owned" auto parts stores.
The radius fit the housing perrfectly,, just a matter of getting the width correct.
No "cobbling or rigging", just measure ten times, and get the width and pinion angle right, then measure it again.

Marty, Carl and Cletus:
I am going to buy new spring perches, weld on the flat plat and that will keep the diff from rotating under torque.
The old torque tube prevented that.
Thanks for the tips gentlemen !!! You guys are good !

Bill: I don't know what an 848 head is.
I have a 1954 235 c.i. 6 cyl Chev motor for sale.
Needs rebuild. It's complete as taken out of my panel
with all accessories, bell housing,
clutch, pressure plate, T.O. bearing, fuel pump, carb,
water pump, fan, starter, generator.
PM me if interested.

Jerry, the 848 head is a bit more performance than the normal head. The number 848 will be part of the casting number on the head itself. Bill was just fishing for leads. He posted the same notification in several forums. 🛠

Most of the high-pressure 235 heads were the "848" higher compression head.

1956-1962 on all car/truck 235 engines.
