I want to run a mechanical fan with my Champion aluminum radiator, but do not know what shroud to order. Brothers and American Classics state on their site that the aftermarket shroud that can be ordered for the 55-59 Chevy trucks only fit the STOCK radiator. Anyone make one work with the Champion radiator or find another shroud that would work better?

Sometimes an oven cookie sheet of the right dimensions can be fashioned into an effective fan shroud. I've done it and it worked out very well after some tweaks.

if your aluminum rad mounts in the original core support and you've got a V8, the aftermarket shroud will fit - it might need minor tweeks, but it's your best bet

I made my own: two sheets of steel with end brackets welded on to join them by nut and bolt (easy removal if needed). Then I welded brackets for mounting. Works fine, looks good in my opinion.

You have a number of variables here depending on year and engine. 55-57 core supports have different locations for V-8 and 6 cyl trucks. A V-8 in a truck with a 6cyl core support would likely need a different shroud than the stock V-8 application. I believe 58-59 trucks had the same core support for V-8's & 6's and the V-8's used the factory shroud.

Do you need a shroud or just want one? 1/2, 3/4 and 1 ton trucks with a 6 cyl didn't use a shroud. You could get a factory shroud on 1 1/2 ton 6 cyl trucks. It was a very shallow shroud. On all trucks with V8's, a factory shroud could be gotten, but not necessarily needed unless you were in the desert operating in extreme hot temps. Being that you're in MI, do you need a shroud? If you have a 58 or 59 truck with a V8, you could move the fan so that it's 1-2" from the radiator. That can be done with fan spacers. If you have a 55 thru 57 with a V8, the core support needs moved towards the engine which means the lower support brackets need to be ones used in a stock V8 truck.

Thanks for the replies. I have a 1/2 ton with a 350 V8, core in the V6 position. I have not had the chance to run the truck in the middle of the summer, I just thought it would help cooling a little and give some protection from the fan. The 350 has the long water pump and spacer putting a flex fan about 1-2 inches from the radiator. Don't mind cutting a plastic shroud to make fit, but do not have the fab equipment to weld or create from scratch.

with the fan more than an inch back you will have overheating at idle and in traffic, you do need a shroud, factory put the fan 1/2-3/4" from the rad .... pic of a 350 in a 56 w/ the usual aftermarket plastic shroud
