Is there an updated easy to install synchro 3 or 4 speed tranny that would pretty much fit my 1/2 ton Chevy truck with floor shift and a torque tube driveshaft ?
Or do I have to go to an open driveline first ?

Yes, any 1948-1954 truck 4-speed will be synchronized in up-shifts, and in down-shifts (except maybe from 2nd to 1st).

The standard 48-54 3-speeds would be column shift.

Tim...does your "yes " refer to having having to change my torque tube to an open driveline first .....or .....does your yes refer to having a tranny available in 4 speed as an easy fit ?
I currently have a 318 3 speed that has been moved from the column to the floor by the previous owner.
If I installed a 4 speed from the same era 1948-1954, how is that an improvement ????

Sorry, You asked about enclosed driveshafts, and my answer responded to that.

I should have been more specific: Yes, any 31xx series 1948-1954 truck 4-speed will be synchronized in up-shifts, and in down-shifts (except maybe from 2nd to 1st), AND, they should have the torque-tube cover on the rear of the transmission (easily confirmed by looking at the rear of the transmission).

The rear enclosed u-joint cover/housing on the 4-speed is swappable/changeable with an open drive-shaft cover/housing.

I do not know what improvement you are looking for: high end or low end. The high gear in both transmissions (and in the 318 3-speed) is 1:1.
