Chevy used vacuum al the way through 59. 58-59 elec are a unique motor specific to those years and they use different wiper transmission arms under the dash as well. I believe 55.2-57 vacuum and elec use the same arms. Sorry, but I don't know on the earlier ones.

Wiper motors are different for '55.1 and '55.2. US '54 Chevy and GMC motors are interchangeable. I would assume Canadian ones are also.

So would a 54 and 55 first be the same . Took a look under the dash and could not see a part number but looks simular to the ebay one even has the nob and control athatched. Tried looking on a 2nd series picture of a dash to see where the wiper control was to see if I could spot the difference.

I think the 54/55 Chevrolet and GMC electric wiper motor "assemblies" are different. I think the wiper motor brackets/attachments (at least) are different.

The 54/55 A-D Chevrolet wiper motors are different from later Chevrolet truck wiper motors (including difference in wiper brackets/attachments)

The 54/55 Chevrolet and GMC dashes are different (the radios are different, too).

Does someone know if it makes a wiper-motor difference regarding 6v positive ground (GMC) vs 6v negative ground (Chevrolet)?

I was referring to vacuum motors when I said Chevy and GMC interchange. I have a Chevrolet 6V electric motor in my '54 GMC and it fits but there is no way to attach the brace. I don't know if the GMC used a different motor or a different brace bracket. The vacuum motor is not braced.

I do know the next series used the same electric motors but different brackets.

Kevinski, did you ever resolve the wiper motor issue? Also, has anyone here done an electric wiper motor conversion for a 54 or 55 1st GMC? There are plenty of options for the Chevy, but the GMC has less space under the dash and the ones for the Chevy don't fit.

I did one in a 55.1 I had and it bolted right in and worked fine. Don't know on a GMC.

I used a Chevy one in my '54 GMC. It was the '54 Chevy option one, not an aftermarket. I never figured a way to mount the brace. I'm running 12V so I used a VR1 reducer.

Cletis, so you are saying you got hold of an OEM motor from a 54 Chevy?
I seem to remember that my original vacuum motor worked-it's been a long time since the truck has run since I'm in the middle of a frame/motor swap. If I can't find a suitable replacement, I'm kicking around the idea of getting a 12volt vacuum pump and seeing if I can drive the original vacuum motor with it.

Yes, there was an optional/accessory 2-speed 6v 54/55st electric wiper for Chevrolet trucks. It even had a clamp for an on/off cable from the optional/accessory foot-pedal-actuated windshield-washer.

tlorber,
Yes you can use an electric vacuum pump to run wipers. I use ones off of old Mercedes diesels that you can get from a salvage yard for twenty bucks. The pump is in the trunk behind the spare tire. With it wipers will run at any speed and never slow down on hills or under hard pull.
