They don't say weather first or 2nd series.does a 55 2nd series have vacuum if so are they the same as a 54 or55 first series. | | | | Joined: Dec 2015 Posts: 2,061 Big Bolt Forum Moderator | Big Bolt Forum Moderator Joined: Dec 2015 Posts: 2,061 | Chevy used vacuum al the way through 59. 58-59 elec are a unique motor specific to those years and they use different wiper transmission arms under the dash as well. I believe 55.2-57 vacuum and elec use the same arms. Sorry, but I don't know on the earlier ones. | | | | Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,440 Extreme Gabster | Extreme Gabster Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,440 | Wiper motors are different for '55.1 and '55.2. US '54 Chevy and GMC motors are interchangeable. I would assume Canadian ones are also. | | | | Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 1,955 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 1,955 | So would a 54 and 55 first be the same . Took a look under the dash and could not see a part number but looks simular to the ebay one even has the nob and control athatched. Tried looking on a 2nd series picture of a dash to see where the wiper control was to see if I could spot the difference. | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,262 Bubba - Curmudgeon | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,262 | I think the 54/55 Chevrolet and GMC electric wiper motor "assemblies" are different. I think the wiper motor brackets/attachments (at least) are different.
The 54/55 A-D Chevrolet wiper motors are different from later Chevrolet truck wiper motors (including difference in wiper brackets/attachments)
The 54/55 Chevrolet and GMC dashes are different (the radios are different, too).
Does someone know if it makes a wiper-motor difference regarding 6v positive ground (GMC) vs 6v negative ground (Chevrolet)? | | | | Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,440 Extreme Gabster | Extreme Gabster Joined: May 2001 Posts: 7,440 | I was referring to vacuum motors when I said Chevy and GMC interchange. I have a Chevrolet 6V electric motor in my '54 GMC and it fits but there is no way to attach the brace. I don't know if the GMC used a different motor or a different brace bracket. The vacuum motor is not braced.
I do know the next series used the same electric motors but different brackets. | | | | Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 1,955 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 1,955 | Took a chance for 20 bucks will see when it comes . | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 345 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 345 | Kevinski, did you ever resolve the wiper motor issue? Also, has anyone here done an electric wiper motor conversion for a 54 or 55 1st GMC? There are plenty of options for the Chevy, but the GMC has less space under the dash and the ones for the Chevy don't fit. | | | | Joined: Jun 2016 Posts: 332 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2016 Posts: 332 | I did one in a 55.1 I had and it bolted right in and worked fine. Don't know on a GMC.

I never figured a way to mount the brace. I'm running 12V so I used a VR1 reducer. | | | | Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 1,955 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 1,955 | I see someone had a link to a 54electric wiper moter on e bay. Did not know if the trucks or cars came with electric. The one i got from e bay is in the garage waiting for a warm weather day. Still not shure it is the same as mine as my truck just fits inside soon the weather will get warmer i hope tonight its a mere - 22 celcius that is eh. | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 345 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 345 | Cletis, so you are saying you got hold of an OEM motor from a 54 Chevy? I seem to remember that my original vacuum motor worked-it's been a long time since the truck has run since I'm in the middle of a frame/motor swap. If I can't find a suitable replacement, I'm kicking around the idea of getting a 12volt vacuum pump and seeing if I can drive the original vacuum motor with it. | | | | Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 1,955 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2010 Posts: 1,955 | The electric wiper moter is on e bay until tue. says it is from a 55 firet series truck 6volt with a bracket. Has two speeds does not park 50 dollars starting bid. no bids as of yesterday. | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,262 Bubba - Curmudgeon | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,262 | Yes, there was an optional/accessory 2-speed 6v 54/55st electric wiper for Chevrolet trucks. It even had a clamp for an on/off cable from the optional/accessory foot-pedal-actuated windshield-washer. | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,832 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,832 | tlorber, Yes you can use an electric vacuum pump to run wipers. I use ones off of old Mercedes diesels that you can get from a salvage yard for twenty bucks. The pump is in the trunk behind the spare tire. With it wipers will run at any speed and never slow down on hills or under hard pull.
