Can anyone give me a reasonably accurate idea of the weight of a complete 216 with fluids drained- - - -fan to bellhousing, less starter and carburetor, etc.? I'm trying to give a shipper an idea of what a 216 strapped to a standard shipping pallet would weigh. If necessary I can load up one of the engines I have stashed away and head for the local truck scale, but I hope someone might have a good guesstimate without having to do that. Thanks!
Jerry

If you'll permit a little levity here...I'd love to see my USPS parcel post guy try to wrestle one outta his hatchback and set it on my front porch. grin

Jerry, I shipped a 235 to TN last week and estimated the weight including the pallet for Fastenal at 750 pounds. That included a complete long block (drained) with all of the accessories, the bellhousing, clutch assembly and flywheel. It also included the wooden cradle that I bolted to the pallet to strap the engine to. I did the estimate by weighing parts separately and knowing that a short block weighs about 320 pounds.

I made one of the wooden cradles as described in Tech Tips, mounted it to the pallet with lag bolts, then strapped the engine to it with a couple ratchet straps. I told the buyer that he could unbolt the cradle and simply add casters to it to make a dolly for the engine.

To load it, first I put the pallet on my truck, then I strapped the engine to the cradle, then I lifted the engine/cradle on to the pallet with my cherry picker, then I bolted the cradle to the pallet. The guys at Fastenal unloaded it with a forklift.

Hope this helps,

Matt

I was considering using Fastenal to ship one from Texas to Tennessee. Got a ballpark figure of the cost of your shipment, please?
Thanks!
Jerry

Joe, Jerry is the one who told me about Fastenal shipping a few months ago. I have used it a few times and have been very pleased with both the service and the price. It is a good value for heavy, bulky items.

You drop it off at the store closest to you and the recipient picks it up at the store closest to him. They ship it on their own trucks using their internal system just like they move product between stores.

You can check it out at--

https://www.fastenal.com/en/22/third-party-logistics-(3pl)

You submit the information from this website requesting a quote, they get back to you usually before the end of the day, you accept the quote online and they send a confirmation. I print a copy of the confirmation and attach it to the item. When you drop it off at the store, they check it in and create a bar code that is affixed to the item so that it is in their freight tracking system. They provide a tracking number and a receipt. When it gets to the receiving store, they contact the recipient to pick it up. Even works shipping from the USA to Canada! Very slick.

The cotton gins around here have a scale that one end goes to one of the forks on a forklift and the other to the load to be weighed---kinda like a big fish scale. Used to cost a Krispy Kreme but with everyone older and and watching their sugar a coffee or cold drink covers the cost.
