I've been reading all afternoon trying to see if anyone has had any luck with this. I know the sleeve has been suggested, building it up with J-B Weld and having it welded and turned down are also suggestions.

Has anyone had any luck with the sleeve? I'm reluctant to try the J-B Weld, it seems like a patch instead of a real fix, I don't know. I've called all over Houston trying to find someone who could weld it up and turn it down without any luck.

If all else fails I'll measure the O.D. of the axle and try to find a sleeve that will work. It is the outboard side of the shaft and the sleeve will have to go down about 3" to work. I'm not sure how I'll do that yet.

Are you referring to the spindle section of the axle that pivots for steering? If so, approximately how big a lathe would be required to turn the part after welding? Welding and re-machining the part is a fairly simple procedure, but the only lathe I have in operation at the moment is limited to a 12" swing.

Hey Jerry: It's the driver's side axle, probably over 30" long, not counting the Rzeppa joint. Once it is separated from the joint, the part where the seal rides is about 3-4" from the end. I did see something on Youtube where a guy drove a Speedi-Sleeve using a longer, maybe 4-5", installation tool, it looked like a piece of thinwall pipe. I think I could figure something out that would work like that, I just need to get the dimensions of the axle where the seal rides.

Here is the Speedi Sleeve catalog.
http://www.skf.com/binary/26-128020/11337_2-EN-SKF-Speedi-Sleeve.pdf

If you know the seal part number and can look up the ID you can get real close just looking for that diameter in the catalog link above.
Be smart to actually measure the shaft and confirm before ordering. In my experience NAPA can order the sleeves as needed, you may have a bearing supplier near by or better source?

Grigg: Thanks for the tip. SKF (speedi-sleeve mfr) and National both make a sleeve for this axle. For some of the more popular seals they also make a sleeve. Once I looked up the seal part# it showed the correct sleeve for that application. In this case it is the same part # for each manufacturer, #99149. It got it off Amazon for $22. I haven't had a chance to put it on yet but it looks like it is going to fit.
