I was thinking of putting a trans with overdrive in the coe not shur if I want a automatic or a stick if I get a stick has anyone used a modern one without to much problems . I know people like the T-5 but I think its a little light duty for a coe I was thinking of something A little heavyer duty. any Ideas. also was thinking of a auxillary trans but I think a trans with overdrive is probably better

Not going original then go with an automatic.
I cannot recommend a T-5 VS NV-4500. Things to consider:
weight(meaning loads) towing, just Sunday driving,
cost and availability, and not last but gear ratios.

Not sure which engine you have, but I put a 700R4 automatic in the 48 2 ton behind a 235.
Good strong trans with a high OD range.
Real 700R4 (not the later 4Lxxxx) is mechanically controlled, needs no computer connections.

What engine are you running? At least one of the adapters to mate a GM automatic to the 235/261 engine is a little flaky, but the suggestion about the 700R4 is a good one. One little suggestion- - - - -get your transmission builder to install the Corvette clutch drum in the overdrive section- - - -it's got a couple more clutch plates for better lockup and no slip in OD. Stay FAR away from any modification with the words "shift kit" in the name- - - -they're a recipie for disaster!

The engine is a 235 it was rebuilt not sure of what was done to it but the compression is well above stock and the oil pressure runs at 60 cold and 50psi hot. I have a 5.9 cummins which may go in there some day. but for right know I am running the 235. also can the 700r4 be locked out of OD is there a year range thats better to get for the 700r4

Yes, there's a shift quadrant position that allows you to select direct drive as the top gear. The early 700's had some growing pains. Try to find one for a late 1980's S-10 behind the 4.3 L V6, and have it rebuilt to the Corvette specifications. You'll need one with a TV cable, not electronic control. There's also a firewall-mounted vacuum switch that controls the torque converter lockup, along with a brake pedal disconnect switch if you want to take advantage of all the lock/unlock options available for the TCC system.

did the nv 4500 trans come in a 1992 chevy 3500hd and did it have a manual speedometer gear? I found a truck with a 5 speed manual trans and 10 lug wheels with a blown motor the owner says trans and rear are good but engine is shot. He dose not know what trans it is only that its a 5 speed

The NV4500 might not have been in GM until 1993.
Have a look at it and see what it is, likely has a tag.

Easy to go electronic from mechanical, expensive and impractical adapter is marketed to go the other way. If a mechanical speedometer is important best option is swapping transmission parts to get mechanical speedo drive if at all possible.

The NV 4500 is a good trans. Some problems with 5 gear when abused and behind a diesel.
Otherwise the gap or step from 4th to 5th is a little big, not the best driving when you need to be in between and neither 4th or 5th is just right, or trying to get to 5th without loosing momentum or lugging the engine.

I looked into that a couple years ago to put one in my 59 Suburban. I could get an electronic speedo to put in my truck (about 450$) but did not find any adapters. They may be out there, but I scrapped the idea and installed an SM465

I had sitting in the shop (had to have the driveline shortened but it has a backup light switch!)

NV4500 did come in 92 3500hd models.

A speedometer that can use the stock electronic sender from the NV4500.

I bought a 1994 nv4500 with the parking brake on the drive shaft its out of a chevy 3500hd i have the trans out of the 47 chevy coe and made some measurements of where the trans bolts to the bellhouseing and the top 2 bolts on the 4500 are about 10 inchs apart the top 2 on the 47 are 8.25 inchs if I measure in on the trans 1 inch from the left top there is no room for the head of the bolt. I cannot mount the bolts from the inside because the bellhouseing has to be bolted to the block first due to mounting bolts that go behind the flywheel and hold the bellhousing to the block. is there an adaptor for this

I believe the 48-up stovebolt bellhousing has the same bolt pattern as the 4500. Are you trying to replace a crash box transmission with the reverse lockout lever on the shifter?

no its a sm420 the engine is a 1954 235. everything I read said the top 2 bolts would fit but the bottom 2 would need to be drilled out.and the center hole would need to be machined out larger but the top 2 are not even close.

So I assume with an automatic you are running something other than the vacuum 2 speed rear end?
