Stripping the '51 5 window COE, I noticed the quarter windows have locking strips (originally chrome plated) but the rear window and windshield don't.
Why don't they match?
Other vehicles I've worked on either have window rubber trim everywhere or nowhere.

Were chrome locking strips available as original equipment in '47 through 55.1? Not that I care. I like them!

All of the rubber on the truck is baked to a crisp.
When breaking out pieces of the locking strip that appeared to be black, little spots of chrome showed on the edges.
The question could be, why did the quarter windows have locking strips and not the other windows?

One/both might not be original?

certainly was a thought. The quarter windows are original tempered glass. Both the windshield and rear glass are broken. Were they broken again earlier and replaced once??
Does anyone know if the 5 window Deluxe COE cab had chrome window moldings in any years from 47-53?

But, the 1954 Master Parts Catalog show the same part numbers from 1947-1954 for the rubber (50' roll) and for the rubber retainer (50' roll). And, the rubber for the rear window.

My uneducated guess is the chrome-color retainer/insert is an after-market non-original decoration?

The rubber used in the rear cab glass of AD trucks is an industry standard Claytonrite rubber,usually in 1/4"x1/8" profile,it was used in everything from cars,boats and heavy plant machinery for many,many years.
I can't say if the 'chrome' insert was ever a factory standard but as others have mentioned it may have been replaced over the decades.
The 'chrome' and or plain black lock strip will easily interchange.
I used it for the rear glass in my 3 window to add a little bling .
The chrome one does however have a tendency to discolour over time,it also goes brittle.

The "chrome" lock strip looks nice, but as jockbolter noted, it will discolor and or peel over time. It must be warm when installing, and be careful when installing not to scuff it with the lace tool. Use plenty of lube. John
