I am ready to purchase the base and clear for my project but want to get a better "feel" for how much paint this project will need for good coverage. The project is a 54 Chevy half ton which will need paint inside and out. Firewall and inner fenders will also receive the color. I would like to have some left over for future needs also. Will one gallon of base and one of clear be enough material?

With the price of paint and the special thinners, hardners primers, primer thinner, clear,clear thinner etc Brace your self. cost me aboout 300$ for 1 qt each primer, base, clear and thinners for just the tail gate. OH 1 gal should do it fine.

I have sourced the paint at $369 for a gallon of base coat/ clear coat set up. The brand I was going to use was Matrix but the supplier has changed to the Lesonol® from Akzo Nobel. Everything I have read about the paint has been good.

Mr. Astro: Is that a Texas brand never heard of it up here. The Harley Paint only comes in Dupont. $40.00 a qt. not figuring all the other stuff I'll need.

There is a guy on E-bay that sells and entire paint kit for painting your car and has choices between urethane and acrylic and 25 basic colors, one of which (MACK GREEN), looks like one of the original stock colors.

For $50 The acrylic is one gallon w/reducer, hardener, paintsuit, stir sticks, masking tape, and filters.

For $160 you get 1 gal of 2k primer/reducer , 1 gal of 2k paint/activator/reducer and 1 qt. 2k clear coat, tack rags, paint suit, filters, maskign tape, stirrers...

I believe you should buy two gallons of base. I buy my paint from TASCO, PPG is a little more than $160, but, I can ask questions and they are always helpful. As for the clear coat, buy one gallon, you can always buy another (dont have to worry about mixing) right off the shelf. With 3 good coats, 2 gallons should do it.

Akzo Nobel is good paint as is PPG. The price on both may seem high but in paint you get what you pay for. Go to a couple of local body shops. Ask around. I use PPG and depending on the paint, color, how it covers and how it is reduced I have used as much as 9 liters (2 gallons) for an entire truck. Check out the PPG site it will tell you the coverage, mixing instructions, dry time and even what size of tip too use in your gun. That's another thing buy the best gun you can afford with the proper tip or tips. A good idea is to tint the primer check out the manufacturers web site for instructions, this will lessen the amount of material required, Good Luck, go slow and gain as much knowlege as possible before starting.

you guy should try auto-air colors! 3 quarts will do the whole truck inside and out. It's very durable and you don't have to hurry to clear it. It cost me 165 for 3 quarts very easy to spray and no toxic fumes. one gallon of base doesnt sound like alot. before i got my sanity back and decided to go flat black, i was gonna go ppg's winter mint the owner of the local paint supply told me i was going to need at least 2 gallons of base maybe more. when my buddy shot his 55 f-100 he used 2 1/2 gallons of base, but he also had a gaylords hard top for the bed also.

Is 1 gallon is enough for just the fenders, hood, outside of the cab and bedsides?

Forgot to mention that I will be using a HVLP gun, which some say expends 1/2 the paint that the old style high pressure guns used.

1 gallon does not go as far as you might think even reduced and with a good HVLP. Notice I said good, there are a lot of guns out there, but you get what you pay for. HVLP does extend the paint but not by 1/2.

I usually have my primer tinted very close to the final color. Quicker coverage and you use less paint. I use Dupont Chromabase and 7900 clear. A cab with hood and fenders will require about 4 qts of Chromabase, which when reduced (1:1), will yield 8 sprayable quarts. Color also dictates how many coats required to acheive coverage. Figure a gallon of clear... HVLP does use less paint if properly setup, but not quite half.

I'd like to learn more about auto-air water based paint. Anyone have any experience with it?
