Question for those of you who have done this before...

Trying to plan out what I will need for my repaint down the road. I will be painting my 3800 one of these days. Going with Cape Maroon (still taking suggestions on modern paints that are close to original, no one can cross the original paint codes, at least no one that I have talked with yet) on the cab, hood, grill, doors, front splash apron. Black on the front fenders. Truck is a cab/chassis so no paint needed for bed.

How much maroon paint (ready to spray) will be adequate to lay down 4 coats color across the outside of the cab, doors, hood, grille, and splash apron? will be using a HVLP gun.

Ditzler and Dupont show Cape Maroon for a 49 truck.

Ditzler, as you most likely know, is now PPG.

Check out the Tech Tip here regarding 47-55 paint codes. In that Tech Tip is information on how to contact the PPG Color Library - they have always been able to provide a modern code/formula for exterior colors for those years.

You say no one could give you a modern formula/mixture. Did you try the PPG Color Library (not the local PPG dealer/jobber)?

With regards to amount of paint, my experience has been that it is somewhat hard to judge because different types of HVLP systems produce different amounts of waste/overspray. My Accuspray turbine system uses 1/2 to 1/3 of the amount used by "conventional" spraying.

You question is important because you no do not want to "over buy" very expensive paint.

I see that 42465967 has edited similar information (the Tech Tip) into his earlier post (while I was composing the last post).

Are you shooting one shot or a base coat/clearcoat? My guess is 2-3 quarts of one shot, top and underneath of hood, cab inside and out. If one shot, 4 coats may be heavy. They will mix a quart at a time. A gallon may be cheaper than 3 quarts. Urethanes are more epensive than acrylics.

Experts will appear ---- however I do paint with an HVLP and use hardner.

Maroon can be a low hide colour so depending on make and brand you could find different amounts needed.
The paint Store you chose to buy from should be able to tell you how much you'll need because the formula will tell them if it's a low hide colour or not.
You may discover the so called cheap quart needs 6 coats while a more expensive brand can cover in 2 coats resulting in saved money.

Just make darn sure you buy more than you need in one mix because additional mixes won't match... Ever!

Will be bc/cc. going over black epoxy. Planning to just buy 2 gallons to be safe. been down the road of not having enough and having to get EVERY LAST DROP out of a gallon before. Not a fun experience. Likely going with Wanda paint as that is what my local jobber carries and has great reviews and has good coverage.

What color primer are you using? I've had a lot of success with getting my paint jobber to tint light-colored primer to be a close match to the top coat color. In my decidedly biased opinion, two gallons for a cab/chassis job is a massive overkill. You should be able to do it with 3 quarts, or a gallon at most.

Sounds about right. Make sure to buy same amount of clear.

using black primer. going to use a paint that is higher up on the line. I've been down the cheap paint road before. I'm not going Glasurit either.
