The top may be too far into the reservoir. There is a thick rubber gasket that goes in the center between the top & bottom. It may be missing. You may e using too thin of oil. use 15w40 or 20w50.

Swapping to one could be the answer. I did that with my '38. Your '50 filter may not all the swap, I'm not familiar with how it's constructed. Here's a good resource for finding a filter.

I don't know were you would purchase one but it can be made from a little strip of rubber. It is about 1/8 in. thick.

If you think you want to change I'd take the filter housing with you to your parts store to be sure the fit satisfies you.
