A guy has a clamshell fold down tail light he says fits the 49-53 Suburban. It looks identical to the 55.2 and up version. Anyone know if they were the same? Thanks in advance for any help.

Maybe someone can look up part number 897861 in Group 2.679, Lamp, Tail & Stop for years after 1957?

It is the same part for;
41-52 Station Wagon (left side in 41-48, and center in 49-52)
47-57 Canopy Express and Suburban with End Gate

TC, be sure you are talking the swing down. If you are, you have answered that they are the same when you show to 47-57. But if they are same for 57 they are also same to 59. I agree with same.

The Suburban with End Gate has the swing-down lamp, as listed in my earlier post.

I guessed it was the same on Station Wagon to 1959, but the online Parts Manual only went to 1957 (that is why I asked, and gave the GM part number). Thanks for the additional-years info.

Your info is good proof. Appreciate your research. I did focus on the end gate 57 but was confused by also used on Station wagon. I am not sure if a station wagon had it or not. No offence intended.

Are those all for 897861? Does L. mean left? Why the comma? The swing down would always be in the center of the tail gate?

I assume (meaning, make an [censored]-of-You-and-Me) that it means that the same part was, in the years designated, installed/displayed on the left of the lower endgate and in some years it was installed/displayed on the center of the endgate.

My assumption is supported by any/no same rear-lamp not being listed for any other location for the same vehicle in the years designated. And, no other rear-lamp is designated for those vehicles.

Negatory. Until I see a swing down not in center, I'm sticking with my story. Maybe the L. does not mean left? I see designations "R.H." in places. Some of these old documents had several different draftsman (PC: Drafter) who just pulled any old abbreviation out of their assume. The FAM is famous for that.
