I don't have any shops in mind..but a question. I always figured the front emblems were either stainless steel (dings, but no pits) or pot metal, which is quite difficult to repair. Are you meaning pot metal when you say "steel".

But this one is just regular steel with old chrome. The back side and the pits are showing rust, and a magnet sticks real hard to it. Which all tells me it is not stainless. I just came back from my shop where I checked the emblems from my truck. The die cast isn't magnetic, but the stainless front emblem is ('55/1st). These emblems are stamped stainless and are just a shell.
I guess you are indicating your emblem is stamped steel that has been chrome plated.

I'm also interested in this thread Brian. I need to get my 51 steel emblem replated.

I think they are reasonably priced and fast.
