I have a 1958 chevy Viking 60. There is a 1957 GMC 370 near me that has the 6 lug wheels and tires. From what I can gather, the GMC 370 is a 2 1/2 ton. My questions is, are the brake drums interchangeable? I know I could swap the whole rear, just wondering about the parts though (mainly getting an extra set of brake drums, not to mention tranny!)

Hy 69Cuda, could you be more specific on the parts you need to know will interchange? Going back and forth between GMC and Chevy parts books is driving me crazy (a short trip to be sure). There are many choices of rear brakes depending on the GVW of the truck or rear axle.

mainly, I am interested in the brake drums. I think the rear may be different since the GMC is electric shift and Chevy is vacuum shift.

The vacuum shift rear is more than likely the GM Corporate rear.

The electric shift rear is more then likely an Eaton rear.

To the best of my knowledge the drums are different...

Hy 69Cuda, I don't think the rear brake drums will interchange, but without disassembly and measurements I can't be sure. The Gmc parts book is huge but unfortunately they do not reference the brake drums to a given series they list them on a chart by dimensions.

If they both have 6 hole Budds, they should both have a 37544315 14"front and a 3754316 15" rear. I doubt that the part number will be cast on them. If there is a number, it will probably be a casting number.

I recall the GM part numbers were cast into the outer rim lip on the drums of my 1941 and 42 trucks. Don't know if it is the same on new trucks...

Thanks guys, both trucks have 6 hole budd wheels. I am going to go look at the GMC tomorrow. I may pick the whole thing up and part it out. I have no use for the engine (although it is seized) and a lot of the cab parts have been stripped already. At least I would have an extra set of 22.5 wheels to sell and probably some other stuff.... and then haul the leftovers to scrap to almost pay for my gas going and getting it! LOL.

well, I passed on the GMC, super rusted, cab is stripped, doors gone, widow maker rims, not sure what tranny it has, not an SM420 though. (PTO on both sides) manifold gone off engine, this is in sad shape unless you need parts!
