What type of grease/oil should I use in the steering box on my 1949 Chevrolet 3100 1/2 ton pickup? Some say 90 wgt. gear lube, and others say chassis grease or a combination of both. Is there another special type of grease that I should be using? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

John Deere Corn Head grease is highly recommended by many. Won't leak out like 90 wt.

Corn head grease (any manufacturer) is readily available from John Deere (as posted by Skooter), and it is self-levelling, and it almost matches the grade of originally-used steering gear grease.

90wt gear oil mixed with gease so it's just self leveling ( like stiff pudding) is a perfect home made alternative.

I bet there are few farm supply stores in PA?

I bet they have, or can easily obtain, corn head grease?

If you make a mix/concoction, you do not want a thick/stiff pudding (one that does not run/level), you want mix/concoction that levels at around room temperature.

Any thoughts on using CV joint grease?

What is the viscosity of the CV joint grease you propose to use?

CV joint grease is often manufactured to NLGI Grade 1 ( this one is NLGI 1.5 ).

The original/recommended self-leveling grease for a steering box is/was grade 00.

Corn head grease is grade 0 (supposedly also self-levelling, but a little thicker than 00).

If the grease does not self level, it gets pushed out of the way over time and the gears run dry, I have seen it. To test your grease, form it in to a column and see if it droops back down or stays. It must droop down!

It's really not that complex.......if it flows alittle at room temp and is slippery its likely work just fine.

Lawn and garden repair shops also use a 00 grease.
Stens I beleves is the brand I picked up locally when no one had corn head grease.
