I finally started my 56. I drove it around the place for a bit. When it is in neutral it makes a loud grinding noise. I'm not sure, but I don't think that would be the throughout barring. The noise quits when I push in the clutch and when its in gear.

That sounds like an input shaft bearing or cluster gear needle bearings. Does the noise get quieter in high gear? If so, you have cluster gear needle bearing problems.
