Check adjustment of float level.

I just got home from a ten mile drive. the engine sounds great and it was running the best it has ever run, but there was one back fire (early in the beginning about 100 yards down the road)and it seams to have more power. its dark now but i'm going to pull a spark plug tomorrow morning to see if is charred. the exhaust does smell gassy. I printed a float adjustment from the manual and will read up on it. thanks

An incorrect base gasket will block the power valve vacuum port causing a very rich mixture.

If you have the wrong main jet in the Rochester, it will do that. I had a Rochester for my 216 and it had a main jet stamped 58. That caused it to run rich. The one I have in there now says 51 on it.

216's run 51's or close to that, and 235's run around 58's. Venturi size is also different from 216's and 235's
