I was shopping for a paper air filter element to install in my oil bath air cleaners and came across this Wix catalog. http://www.wixfilters.com/lookup/FilterBySize.aspx

It groups the filters by type, then by hight, in 1" increments. Best of all it lists the CFM for most of the filters. So now I get a filter the correct size and cfm.

#42157 and #46184 look promising.

Just in case your oil bath filters are like mine, here is a cut and paste of a response that I sent a couple months ago that might be helpful.

The Tech Tip that Marc submitted is a GREAT one! I followed his instructions, but made a couple slight changes because I didn't have the foam that he used. I used the same model oil bath air cleaner that Marc used in the Tech Tip.

I cut out all of the insides of the top instead of leaving the upper star and the inner cylinder. Easy to do with tin snips, then grind down the nubs with a die grinder.

I cut 1 1/8" off the bottom edge of the top with an angle grinder. This allows more air flow (increased to about 2 1/8" from 1"), but leaves enough metal on the sides of top so that the dry air cleaner is not exposed to retain a stock look. This step also eliminates the roughly 1/2" lip on the inside bottom edge of the top to allow the air filter to fit inside.

I used a K&N E-9216 filter. It is a little taller (4.449") than the one Marc used. It fits perfectly into the modified top and seals against the top and the bottom, so no need for foam. When assembled, it looks completely stock.

I am in need of modifying a '57 pancake oil bath air filter to go on top of a Carter AFB. Your mods have given me a good starting point. I won't have to hack up the oil bath part of the filter since it is totally enclosed inside the cover. Folks are getting $400 for these filters, so I can't bear to cut it up.

Thanks for the kudos, and glad to see someone taking my basic premise and improving on it as I had hoped.
My stock 216 breathes good with my mods, but I can see the value of opening up the airway for a more powerful Stovebolt 6.

I just used this site to get a better fitting filter for my '38. FYI the filters are listed by their exact size with the "by the inch" being the size range they are grouped in. For example if you click on 2" filters you'll see all of the filters from 2" to 3" in thickness. It lists the OD, ID and thickness. Pretty handy.

I just put two #46184 filters in my converted oil bath housings. I went on e-bay and found a dealer selling two for $24 + free shipping, not a bad deal since I needed two anyway. I like the slightly shorter look, if you want OEM hight, look at the #42157. Both filters fit the '47-'53 oil bath truck air cleaners just like Matt shows in his links above.

These are good thick filters made for V6 motors, not lawn equipment, so they should last a really long time.
