Hey guys and any gals,
I'm sure this is a very overly repeated question...
Looking for an overdrive manual transmission that will directly bolt into a 1965 pickup bell housing in my 54 Chevy pickup. 5 or 6 speed with the 10 spline shaft. Rated for at least 400 ft lbs of torque and at least 300 HP. Electric or mechanical speedo.
Thanks
Running a beefed up 292 inline 6 and a 12 bolt posi. Currently running a SM420 trans.

Don't limit yourself just yet with so many details that can be worked around. Input shaft spline count for example is of little importance because clutch disc is easy and cheap to swap as needed.
How about ask for and come up with a list of OD transmissions that would be a reasonable fit behind the 292. Then after understanding the choices weed that list down to the one you like best for whichever reasons suit you.

A GM NV4500 five speed OD would be one reasonable choice and worth researching.

I would have more options but I just put in a brand new custom clutch for a 10 spline. I will check out the NV4500

Could still change just the clutch disc or have yours fit with a new center to suit the desired transmission. Keep the existing pressure plate. Or wait to wear it out first and in a few years or decades swap to the OD.

What is your budget? If billfold is thick then the TKO 500 would do the job without breaking a sweat. If the pocket book can stand the $2300 or so then the price of a clutch plate to fit isn't a factor.

Good NV 4500 transmissions aren't so cheap any more either unless you luck into finding one at the right price. If they don't quite know what they have.

I'd like to be under $1000. That's my current possible budget anyway. I've seen an NV4500 locally for $450
Are they all the same? For GM?

Dodge used a lot of them too and they have a different bolt pattern.
Many from Dodge Cummins application have had 5th gear failure. Some fixes exist but none perfect, some more wishful than helpful.
Also some different input shaft lengths though they can be swapped.
An adapter may be necessary.

Look up "Advance Adapter" for general info and possible adapter.

NV-4500's from a 2wd vehicle with no transfer case adapter are less in demand around here, so look for a passed up one like that.

The NV-3600 come with and without bellhousing attached, if you can live with a stock hp engine, one would work, several similar trans.' Exist, so, make sure what you are getting.
