Received brand new vanity plates today and wonder if anyone has experience with a clear spray that will protect it from fade in the sun. Lots of products out there but don't know how effective they are.

A lot of the "clears" will yellow over time. Maybe just a good paste wax every few months.

NV just started a mandatory (money grab) program that requires plates be replaced every 8 years because they become "illegible" to law enforcement. So instead of making them better the taxpayer just gets to pay an extra "fee" annually. Good stuff!!

Why protect it if you have to replace? Nothing known to mankind, that would be legal to do, will keep the sun from degrading the paint/ink. It's about $1.25 per year for a new plate. $10/8 yrs. Something with UV protection may help a little. But may react to the paint or cause more fade or as said, yellow. I would just not worry about it and drive on. Respectfully, Sir.

Does it apply to our new plates somehow? I hadn't heard yet, glad to know an Oklahoma lawman that knows what's going on!

Next time you go to renew your tag sticker you will be charged for a new plate. Only way around it is "Vanity Plates" and even then you will receive new regular plates every so often. In Oklahoma you must keep the regular plates in the vehicle even if you have "Vanity Plates". The justification as stated by Fourty9 is to make it easier for Law Enforcement to read your plate. Bunch of carp, just another way to raise taxes.

This stuff works great on old license plates that I have restored. It is expensive, but it works great. I try to have a few things to clearcoat when I use it so that I can get my money's worth.

http://www.spraymax.com/index.php?id=361&L=1

It is a two part automotive clearcoat. Results on small projects can be as good as with a gun. Once you pop the seal and mix in the catalyst, it has a 48 hour shelf life. This can be extended another day or so by keeping it in your refrigerator.

I would not recommend the 2K Rapid Coat. It is VERY fussy about flash time. The regular 2K is more forgiving. I allow about 20 minutes flash time between coats.
