I have a 1961 - 235 that I need a water pump for. I was ask if it is a singal bypass or a dual bypass. What is the differance and does it matter.? Am I missing a adaptor plate of some kind? My block has a hole about 3" in diameter where the water pump bolts. I have a water pump that I thought was for this engine and it will not bolt up,it is the same as the water pump on my 216 engine. What do I need?

You need a 55 2nd design & later pump, no the same as your 216 or early 235. Unless you have another hose above the heater hose on the pump either 1 or 2 port will do, plug the unused fitting.

Thanks for you fast responds. I am putting this 235 in my 46 truck. I just read about a adaptor plate that can be used to use the old style pump in the stock position as the 216, is this nessasary for application ? I guess the pump shaft is shorter on the old style pump on the 216.

Not only is the pump shaft shorter, it is in a different location.

A newer block and water pump locates the fan higher relative to the earlier radiator - less efficient cooling results.

That changes things a bit!
Old style pump w/ adapter plate the way to go.
