For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 1,123 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 1,123 | Ordered a JC kit for the project. While waiting for the body shop to complete their work I am working through the long list of smaller tasks needing done.
One is the upholstery. Yes, I know I can have a pro do it. But, I'd like to take a stab at doing this myself.
I found a bit of info in the Tech Bulletins Chevrolet published long ago. The PO used "hog rings" on the replacement he did. It's "ok", but needs replaced. The rings have torn through, in places. I prefer to not use those again. The clips, also in hand, JC sells look to be more of a hassle to instal than preferred.
I am pondering options. Now leading, is to use a leather hole punch at each anchor point, insterting a short piece of round bar--approx 16 penny nail gauge-- between the folded vinyl and slipping a plastic zip tie into the punched hole and wrapping it around a seat anchor point and cinching it up.
Opinions please...Do you think it will work and last? | | | | | Joined: Jun 2016 Posts: 236 DLBrooks | | DLBrooks Joined: Jun 2016 Posts: 236 | I have a 41 seat that I got an aftermarket custom seat cover in black grained naugahyde. I had to do repairs to the bottom seat assembly and now it is at the upholstery shop for padding, installation, foam support where neededand I am pretty sure they will be using hog rings. The factory used push in clips of a sort which probably work better if you can figure how to get them in. If you use tyraps I would prefer the nylon ones of old that have a metal catch in the head. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 1,123 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2008 Posts: 1,123 | Just came across this old post and thought an update might help someone else later.
After trying the install myself and being really disappointed with the fit, I opted to take the whole mess to a pro. He ended up having to recut and sew the upholstery to fit correctly without wrinkles and puckers at the corners. He also replaced some of the foam padding the previous owners upholstery guy used. He had used an ivory colored Naugahyde type material, which was not an option to keep.
The $100 he charged me was well worth the outcome. He did use hog rings stead of the clips, which is ok by me. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 Bubba - Curmudgeon | | Bubba - Curmudgeon Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 29,270 | $100 sounds very good.
Congratulation
